Now more than ever, employees are realizing the importance of staying healthy and fit. With the support and encouragement of Barron Collier Companies, team members are able to take advantage of a variety of programming, challenges, educational series, and support from the Health and Wellness Committee.
The committee, comprised of team members within various departments in the company, plans events throughout the year geared toward all fitness levels. Their mission is to establish and maintain a worksite culture that supports wellness while fostering collaboration between departments. Committee Chair, Stephen Massie, states “I’m always trying to live a healthier lifestyle, and this group supported me during the months I trained for the half marathon.” Massie ran the Naples Daily News Half Marathon in January 2020 (pictured with his mom here in this article) and said he couldn’t have done it without the encouragement of his co-workers. Rahsaan Simon, a project engineer with Peninsula Engineering, a division of Barron Collier Companies, adds, “After months of training I would say my overall experience of the NDN Half Marathon was very rewarding. I enjoyed the people and environment. I left that course with the feeling that I had really accomplished something.” Rahsaan and Stephen are great examples of team members partaking in the positive company culture within BCC.
Before the pandemic, a company-wide step challenge got everyone moving. Whether it was an early morning or lunchtime walk with co-workers or evening runs along the nearby Greenway boardwalk, team members enjoyed this friendly competition and got healthy while doing it. Donna Marquez, New Home & Welcome Center coordinator for the BCC master-planned community, Ave Maria, shares her secrets to success, “At work, I utilize my stand-up desk and walk-in place and also walk during my lunch break. At home, I walk in place while watching television, etc. Wherever I go I am constantly moving. During the last challenge, I walked an average of 24,000 steps per day. The BCC Health and Wellness Committee was very supportive during the challenge. We received weekly emails updating us on our progress & helpful tips. These emails encouraged me to keep pushing forward. I stayed focused on my goal and thankfully won first place in the challenge.”
Barron Collier Companies was also proud to sponsor the Wellfit Girls 5K Run and Moe’s Corporate 5K Run. Before the pandemic, employees gathered for group yoga sessions, onsite flu vaccines and blood drives, and enjoyed complimentary chair massages in the headquarters office. Now in May 2021, with mask restrictions lifting and work-life returning to pre-pandemic culture, the Health and Wellness committee plans to resume more programs for the remainder of 2021. Employees are still able to take advantage of the Fitness Reimbursement benefit and receive up to $35 monthly reimbursement with proof of a minimum of 10 workouts per month.
Healthy employees are happy employees and Barron Collier Companies recognizes the importance of providing tools and opportunities for team members to achieve a healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically.
